Could you tell us a little bit more about yourself and what made you start the business? 

 

I started Foss Candles with my Icelandic partner because we were struggling to find candles that we liked and that was good for the environment. We found too many candles that were overpowering and sweet fragrances and we wanted to create some candles that were more subtle and inspired by nature and natural scents. I fit creating candles around my full-time job working in social media for a university.

What inspires your work? 

 

We are very inspired by nature and the natural world. Iceland is full of beautiful natural spots - waterfalls, volcanoes, glaciers and lava fields and we wanted to celebrate that! I love the idea of bringing the nature inside your home in a small way - and our candles help you do that. 

 

 
What is the most important thing for you in your business?

The most important thing for me with Foss Candles is to try and be as eco-friendly as possible. The candles themselves are vegan-friendly with only using 100% natural soy wax as this is much better for the environment. So many candles are made with paraffin wax that emits terrible chemicals when burnt and more people need to realise this! We also use recycled packaging wherever possible. I think we are in a climate crisis and every business has a part to play in this. In Iceland this is especially important as the glaciers are melting quickly and one has completely disappeared this year already - we need to stop this!
