Meet Richard,
Owner & Designer
LOWRY LONDON
Could you tell us a little bit more about yourself and what made you start the business?
We started Lowry London to make well-designed furniture that is built to last beyond the economic cycle. I was sick of seeing furniture being manufactured as a disposable product but also aware that people needed alternatives. I decided to make a commitment to the environment - we were one of the first companies I’m aware of to plant a tree for every product sold (no matter how small).
As part of our commitment to the longevity of our products we also refuse to use MDF - due both to the VOC’s but also the fact that those designs generally don't age well - if you look at a veneered piece they will more often than not chip (very hard to repair), get wet or hot from a spilt drink or hot plate, and the veneer will lift. A lot of that furniture isn’t built to last but is more designed around ease of manufacture.
What inspires your work?
The wood itself and the engineering involved to make sure a solid wood piece is built with the correct tolerances for movement into the design. Overall we have quite a minimalist design aesthetic and try to keep to that through our products and our business.
What is the most important thing for you in your business?
That our clients are happy and their lives are enriched by our pieces. We always see it as an honour that someone has chosen a design of ours to live with. To distil that into a principle it really then comes down to quality and making sure nothing leaves the workshop unless it is up to our standards.
A little story or an anecdote you would like to share?
